The Astrological Sun Signs: The Details of Virgo

The sixth of the sun signs is Virgo, and those born between August 23rd and September 22nd are under its influence. Virgo can be reserved, modest, and practical, but there is far more to understanding this discriminating astrological sign than simply looking at a list of traits. Many times, the personality of Virgo is discussed, but the details are ignored. In truth, both are important to grasp the subtleties of the sign of the virgin.

The Virgo Personality

The typical Virgo is industrious, analytical, painstaking, and seeks to know and understand the mysteries of the world. Virgo is a mutable, feminine earth sign. Feminine sun signs are self-contained and strong through inner reserves. Mutable signs are flexible, versatile, and adaptable. Those born under an earth sign are practical and stable. These factors come together to indicate someone who might be willing to accept change and is eternally practical. On the other hand, this person may internalize a little too much and be unwilling to share their inner feelings.

Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury, an ancient god of communication and commerce. Mercury rules the traits of intelligence and reason, but can also indicate a predisposition towards a high-strung temperament. The temper of those ruled by Mercury is not easily aroused, but their anger, once brought to the surface, can be terrible.

The primary symbol of Virgo is the virgin. The virgin is pure, modest, industrious, and lives to be of service to others. The glyph (written symbol) of Virgo represents a virgin. If you can't immediately see this, picture the female reproductive organs closed and untouched. It takes a minute, but most people usually see it. The straight line connected by curved lines, one of which is crossed, represents wisdom tied to feeling and emotion, but crossed with a healthy dose of practicality.

The Correspondences of Virgo

The sign of Virgo rules the nervous system and intestines. As such, those born under this astrological sign are prone to illnesses caused by stress and nervous tension. Ulcers can be a particular problem to many Virgos as they attempt to deal with the stress of daily life. Relaxation techniques such as meditation are of of particular use for anyone born a Virgo.

Wednesday is considered the luckiest day for a Virgo, and the numbers five and three are especially attractive. Sapphire is associated with Virgo because this stone brings tranquility of mind and protects against illness and injury while traveling. The colors of refinement and taste are also connected to the sign of Virgo.

Some other correspondences of Virgo are:
  • The colors grey and navy blue
  • Cities such as Boston, Heidelberg, Paris, and Strasbourg
  • Countries such as Crete, Greece, Turkey, and West Indies
  • Any nut-bearing trees
  • Flowers such as morning glory and pansy
  • Mercury (the metal, as well as the planet)
  • Small domestic pets (especially cats, small dogs, and rodents)
Many of the details connected to Virgo are associated with an analytical mind and the restraint of emotion. Those ruled by Virgo sometimes arouse anger and violence in others because of their tendency to interfere. Their critical tongues and unemotional attitudes may sometimes isolate them from others and cause rifts in promising relationships.
